I must add however, that I am a police officer. And THAT traffic stop, as told, is perfectly fine in my own opinion. Sounds like it might have been slow that day and he was looking for good stops. Sometimes anything suffices.

As a police officer, I don't think I would make that stop, unless I thought it would lead to something else. That sounds like a good PC type statute. It's not uncommon for stops like that to lead into a bigger issue, ie;DUI, drugs, suspended driver, etc.
Again, the officer didn't issue a citation, so one would think he was having a slow day or was "window shopping" (as we call cheese PC stops) for a more serious infraction.
