Actually, I think Ford would argue that they chose both and that S197 was the right car for the time. I think the long term proves this out at least somewhat, since Ford North America's ability to bring the D2C platform the Mustang rides on in under budget and the Mustang's success in the market has changed the way Ford looks at rwd cars in every respect. Arguably Mustang is the only reason Ford is developing the upcoming GRWD platform at all, and the Mustang's overall success is the reason Dearborn got the job with GRWD and no Australia.

An IRS exists for the D2C platform already, and Ford can adapt the platform to IRS anytime they choose. In fact, GRWD appears likely to be a heavily revised version of D2C, and we know that GRWD is using an IRS setup. Their hand wasn't forced, Ford chose not to us IRS in the S197 update.
