Thats what I hate about 16:9 tvs. They are 1080p but running bluray through them, they aren't true 1080p since they don't actually fill the whole screen since the resolution doesn't match the widescreen.
I hope you didn't think I was "talking down" to you. I didn't mean to come off that way if that's how you took it. I wasn't sure whether you wanted to know what the lens did and/or how it did it... so I tried to explain the entire process the best I could...
