A lot of factors you have to figure into this. 1st of all OF COURSE Conan would lose an alleged 60% of the late night audience when NBC took the same Leno format and moved it to the 10:00pm slot. So naturally the audience would move along with him to that slot. If they didn't have that option, Conan probably would have only lost 15-20% (And that's mostly due to the generational gap. Conan has a much younger sense of humor), which is almost expected when you make a big change like that.

This is clearly a catastrophic failure on NBC's part in trying to cut out a Tonight Show slot in at a time that was waaay too early. If it was truly a brand new show format, maybe it could work, but it was The Tonight Show without a desk. You really can't blame Jay or Conan. Someone needs to take the heat for this whole entire mess. NBC called together these big press conferences and marketing ploys acting like they were coming with something with brand new ideas, and it was no different. I hope Conan goes to Fox and crushes that timeslot.
