Big NASA project = lots of jobs, new technologies. Another point: Earth is home to roughly 6 billion humans, a number growing by about 100 million each year. Its going to get crowded (barring some huge global disaster, which is just another reason to colonize other planets), so where are we going to fit everyone? Don't believe me? Go take a look at Japan or China, see how crowded things are there. I was stationed in Okinawa for 2 years, it was a year and a half before I came back stateside for leave, and everything back in the US seemed HUUUUUGE and spread out!

Excuse the rambling, but my point is: Perfecting space flight and colonizing the moon/mars/whatever else we can find is humanity's only hope for long term survival. Most people are too short sighted these days to give a crap (If its not going to benefit ME in MY lifetime, why do I care?) Its that attitude that will stifle scientific breakthroughs.
