I've used this combo for over a decade:
$5 ELM327 bluetooth scanner (Amazon or Ebay)
$5 Torque Pro app (Android, but there are similar for Apple).
Never needed anything more for my vehicles. And it is the single most often used tool I own.
Also useful when I sit in the back seat while one of my kids is test driving a prospective purchase. I can watch the fuel trims, check last time codes were cleared, all the good stuff.
