Yeah, definitely still a risk. One reason I never take a proximity key out of my pocket and push buttons. Don't need much power if you use the button on the door handle. And once you're in, the car will still start with a dead fob. Just have to put it in the right spot (rear cup holder).
Do these cars not give you any kind of warning? The BRZ would pop up a 'key fob battery low' warning in the cluster.
