It really comes down to the level of security you are looking for. The fob can be secure, but also depending on the situation it is less secure than using the pin code.
For example if you keep the IGLA fob with your regular Key Fob, if you keys are ever stolen then the thief wouldn't even know you have the IGLA installed. The car will just start and run for them just like a vehicle without an IGLA installed.
So while might not be something too worried about, give 2 examples where the key can open you up to theft.
First, god forbid you are ever carjacked the car is gone if you have the fob with the key fob. Also even if you have the anti-carjacking option installed, the care might shutdown on them after they drive away. But having the IGLA key will allow them the opportunity to restart your Camaro and drive it away.
Granted if you keep the IGLA fob separate from your key fob then the above won't necessarily be a problem.
The other situation is if you are using the IGLA fob when dropping your car off for Service. This provides an opportunity for someone to steal the keys and then take the car. Better to set a temp pin, and teach your shop how to use. Then if for some reason the car is stolen, it is without a doubt an inside job.
If you use the pin code yourself, it is easy to train someone else to use. You know the rate to input the keys, and the signs your car makes when it is authorized. In my car I know the indicator lights don't flash everytime auth happens, but the beeps do without doubt. Also when you use the pin all the time, you become familiar with the pin change procedure and can change the pin effortlessly whenever you want. It really doesn't add much additional time before you can drive away, especially if your vehicle is set to allow starts but auth before being put into gear.
Also if really concerned about security, and didn't get these options when you had your IGLA installed, I'd recommend asking your installer enabling these options.
- Anti-carjacking
- Key Programming Block (This might be default on the newer firmwares) - IGLA needs to be either at least authorized and/or in Service Mode
- OBD Block - This prevents anyone(dealer, locksmith, thief, etc) from connecting to computers in the car if the IGLA is not authorized and or in Service Mode
The above are really game changers for security.
Note: I am not entirely positive the minimum mode needed to disable some of the security would ask your installer. But know that Service Mode allows everything as the IGLA is basically disabled.
