That would be a more likely guess, I think I wrote it earlier, a lot of the time these CF shafts fail from getting nicked or scratched and weakening the material. A rock hitting it and causing a imperfection is definitely possible.

When I change out third members on my race car I'm extremely careful when i remove the shaft to make sure it doesn't touch anything on the way out and then back in.
