Street driving, I'd be OK with up to 3 years old when buying a new tire. But, for street, it also matters how quickly you think you'll wear them out. If it's a very low miles per year garage queen and you plan to have the car a long time, the tires will age out before they wear out. About 10-12 years is generally considered a safe life for tires that are on a car that is garaged when not being driven.
