Apologize for the very late post. I actually thought I posted on April 17th but now don't know where that post went. Anyway, I was able to get the splitter off by slipping putty knives between the TOP of those eight center retainers and each respective opening (so total of 8 putty knives). Even so, it was still difficult. The putty knife blade needs to cover the entire width of the notch that's on the top of the retainer. If not, it won't allow the retainer to come loose.
