99% of ring land damage is NOT caused from ring butting.
Factory LT4's have a .8mm ring that uses a gap in the .017 range. They NEVER get hurt from ring butting.
LT1's hurt the pistons because they're junk cast parts with a high top ring location. The thinnest part of the piston is where the back of the top ring groove gets close to the valve pocket. This measurement is commonly referred to as the B-Dimension. This is where they fail 99% of the time. Typically from detonation.
