I keep mine under the hood for 2 reasons.

1) I can just set the hood down (not close it all the way) and the wire runs out without being pinched. I also lay down a microfiber where the cable would be touching the paint. I don't like the idea of keeping my trunk open, or running the cable through it when closed.

2) The power outlet next to my trunk would be a trip hazard when trying to get to my other vehicles, go outside, take trash out, etc...
