Under hood is fine. The trickle mode is less than 1 amp, so a lot of chargers are fine. Just make sure it continues to trickle once it detects full charge.
Doubt you damaged the battery by not using trickle. Deep discharge and frequent start/stop cycling are two common battery killers. Our cars do not have stop/start.
