I would say it is a possibility for the wheel to be damaged based on the object size/length.


Think about it, these tires have little rubber between the road surface and the wheel. A long enough object could come in contact with the inner surface of the wheel and be driven into the wheel. Continual impacts of the object while driving, no mater how slow, could cause a wheel failure. Sitting on that object on the side of the road or on the tow truck bed could cause the failure.


Think of it like a tack vs a nail in your tennis shoe or boot. The tack would not be of no consequence but a regular nail through it and your foot will let you know. Continue walking on the nail and if it did not initially puncture your foot, it probably will.
