If it’s a lanolin / oil type coating, it’s not the end of the world. Dirt will collect and will solidify the coating to the point it can be rubbed off, but not easily washed off, maintaining a nice rust free surface. On the other hand, if it’s a hard rubber type coating, that’s not a great option. Those type coatings can trap moisture and actually cause more significant rust problem's.
