You'll have to file down an indexing tab on the inside of the silver plastic ring to get it to fit over the adapter. I only removed enough so that it would fit over the adapter. Hope this helps!
Dang that was fast! I was still editing my post. lol

I see where I went wrong now. I separated the boot from the black plastic retainer - this was the point of no return.

My big mistake was not realizing there was also clips holding the retainer in place.
