No knocks on the engineer, he ran the car pretty hard around the track but rumors are that Oppenheiser ran a 7:08 in it after the 7:16 run before packing it up.
I suspect that although the were marketing that GM was "unleashing the camaro team" they were really still on a leash and did not want to openly demonstrate a solid beat down on the Corvette, which it clearly would have.

interesting. I always heard they didn't push the car to the limits with the tires and such and could have shaved a few seconds off, but I never heard of rumours of running a 7:08 from anywhere before
