For me, sitting in a prison cell while the dead thief's family divide up the assets I worked for all my life, because the law decided I wasn't justified to put his bitchass down for attempting to steal my $30k car, is a fate worse than being out a car for a couple months while I wait on the insurance company to cut me a check. It's not like I'd let someone punk me out of my car in a face to face. You don't have to cower in fear, but you have to be smart enough to make sure the law is on your side. Even if you get cleared criminally, you still may face civil charges. It could be a week or two, or up to a year or more of your life tied up defending your actions. I promise it won't be more than 60 days waiting for that insurance check.
