I've read from vehicle engineers that modern coolant gauges are intentionally slow to respond and don't respond to short peaks as to not constantly alarm or cause concern to the drivers. I wish they were a bit more accurate. My coolant gauge stays at the same spot practically all the time no matter how I'm driving and the outside temp. The oil temp gauge moves around more and will show higher temps if I drive it harder, but the coolant gauge stays put.
