Stock engines are fine. GM sorted out the GDI carbon buildup issues in the Gen5 LT engines in MY2015. Has since been debated and documented multiple times on these forums, with pictures similar to the LT4 in the 2nd link (i.e. not an issue). Catch cans are not necessary.
Catch cans are recommended for modded/tuned cars.
