This is a myth that seemingly will never die. Exhaust scavenging is good, but that occurs primarily in the exhaust manifolds and secondarily where the left and right exhaust banks first meet (i.e., the X-, H-, or Y-pipe).
The mufflers are well behind this and play no part in scavenging, so they should have zero backpressure for maximum power.
