The only time I disconnect the battery is when I work near airbags and their connectors (say, the steering wheel or seats). If the car is off, shorting the turn signal bulb doesn't matter, and even in the worst case you'll burn a single fuse.
However, if you want to be 101% safe, the official advice is yes, every time you service any electrical or electronic component, you should disconnect the battery first (in the trunk), then wait at least 15 minutes before continuing.
DON'T CLOSE THE TRUNK (and all doors) after you disconnected the battery, or you'll have a nasty time reconnecting the battery (or even getting back into the car)---you'll need to pop the keyhole cover on the driver door handle, use the physical key and climb through the trunk via a hole behind the folded down rear seat

I usually put a microfiber towel on the trunk latch to make sure I don't lock myself out of it.
