If I were hooking up such a charger to my car, I'd do it through the front just out of convenience. The cables involved are made to carry hundreds of amps so I'd guess any effect with a charger is going to be minimal. My cars get driven year round so it's not something I have to deal with. Just pointing out why a mechanic might advise to hook up directly to the battery.
