A timely resurrection of this topic, which was also just discussed in another recent thread. (

I just had a particularly annoying instance of this issue yesterday, leaving my office around 5:20 pm and never getting out of the "long afternoon shadows" for enough time to trigger the dash lighting back to daytime mode during my hour-long commute home. I do think I partially caused this by starting the car to get the AC going before removing the sun shade, which made the sensor think it was darker out than it was. I am thinking if I remove the sun shade before starting the car in those conditions, I may not start out with a dark dash.
The level of lighting to trigger the dash back to daylight seems to be too conservative, in terms of the brightness and duration of light required to automatically revert to daytime mode, as shown by this case where it was plenty light out after I removed the sun shade and was driving home (and which I've also seen after going through an underpass late in the afternoon and having the dash get stuck in the "dark" mode).

That's another potential factor I hadn't considered - I always drive with my headlights on. I wonder if I switch to auto, or switch the auto mode off using the headlight switch, if that would restore the daytime brightness. I will give that a try...
