I strongly recommend a silicone plate "frame" similar to this one if you want to preserve your paint:

By the way, 100 out of 100 people screw the plate holder into the rear bumper, that's what the reinforced dimples are designed for. The reason there are so many is the different plate sizes and attachment points across the world.
