Don't be shy with the PPF. I have chips well above the seam.

The side skirts stop the crap that bounces off the ground and back up.
The rock guards/mud flaps stop the direct assault on the paint while the side skirts help block the secondary abuse.
I have the ZL1addons rock guards and still have damage.
Biggest thing is the Goodyears, they throw more junk than other tires. Switching to Continentals greatly reduced the rocks, by a lot.
