It is more rare to have a failure like that but it can still happen.
Autos in case of shifting failure can engage wrong gears or several at the same time and lock up. In a manual that's way harder to do.

Thanks for the info, makes me feel a little safer at 130 mph in turns like 8-9 at Willow Springs. A failure like this could disastrous but my ZLE is not modded so that helps too.
