I'm not going to get into the politics of the tax, but I wonder how representative the EPA mileage is of normal driving.

I do better than the EPA on every car I drive, even cars I use as grocery getters. For example, my current grocery getter is a 2016 Trax, rated at 32 mpg combined. Mine is at 34.5 mpg and its average speed over its life is 28 mph, so plenty of time in traffic.

It's amazing that, even living in a congested area with lots of traffic delays, hilly terrain, and cold winters, I'm always better than the EPA rating. I did read in Car and Diver that many ICE cars best the EPA rating by a bit, but EVs almost all fall short of EPA range. Tesla in particular is 30% below! Hmmm....
