Onstar didn't alert you because your car was never started, nor did it move during these break-ins. Imagine how inundated Onstar would be with false break-in notifications if they put a security system in every car that activated under every break-in scenario. It would get to the point that Onstar would ignore those notifications exactly the same way most people ignore the horns going off on a cars security system in a parking lot!
If you live in an area where your car is being broken into on a regular basis then you either need to a) move the car to a more secure location. Or b) Buy a security system that is customized to the type of break-ins you're experiencing. However, keep in mind that there's not a single security system that stops smash and grab break-ins. They'll just alert you long after the thief is gone...

That being said, your security system did work...you still have your car.
