I do prefer the internal drum brake version, as it simplifies changing pads. As TP2SS points out, the other variant has special calipers with a motorized screw plunger. This has to be backed out and recalibrated depending on the car. The dealers do it electronically, but there are work-arounds to do it manually by disassembling the caliper.
Another way you can sense if the e-brake is engaging is just feel the car when you park on uneven pavement. I can feel the brakes grab on a slightly not level parking lot.
