I have a 2SS with the "cable puller" variant of the e-brake. I do hear my motor engaging when I use the brake. Also the "park" illuminates. I have not had this system apart, but usually there are small brake shoes within the central hub of the rear rotor that perform the parking brake function. I have other cars with the system that uses a motorized screw to drive the calipers.

I would go to a not very steep hill and see if the car rolls. My driveway has maybe a 15% incline and that is enough to see if the parking brake is holding. I know from using the brake while I empty my mailbox every night. Rarely I don't pull the switch all the way and the car will be rolling when I open the door!

Oh, and there is no change in pedal feel or position with the "cable-puller" variant.
