Could be.
I think you should be able to get throwout bearing problems to reveal themselves just sitting in the driveway pressing and releasing the clutch. The fact that the noise changes based on acceleration/deceleration means drivetrain loading is a factor. Maybe output shaft, U-joints, differential?
