From 1982 to 2002 yes they were the same engines and trans
From 1967 to 1976 they used Pontiac engines
From 1977 to 1979 they used the Pontiac 400 and Olds 403(automatic only)
1980 was the 301 Pontiac or the 403 Olds
In 1981 only the lowly Pontiac 301 remained in NA or Turbo
I owned a 1978 SE(Gold/Black Bandit) with a 403 I traded my 1980 Z/28 4speed for it and was hooked on TA's ever since
I also had a 1984 HO a 1988 GTA L98 a 1994 TA GT a 95TA a 1999 TA and a 2001 TA

While I admire the recreations and I billieve its your car you can do with it what you want I wouldn't buy one because of the premium attached.
