Luckily there are better ones in the zl1s, but then we get back to the over computerized stuff you're mentioning. Thinking back on it, I wonder when cars hit their "peak" in terms of being totally badass without all the other stuff interfering with the experience. Come to think of it, my manual trans 08 c6 was pretty amazing with some modifications (brakes, bolt ons, tune). I also had an 06 EVO IX that was AMAZING for a stock car. That was probably the only car I've owned that was so good off the lot I never felt the need to modify it.
So, I had a C7 Grand Sport Vert M7, which should have solved the muted driving experience that you describe. The M7 with the top down helps enhance the experience but it still felt muted to me as well. I think the main reason is that the Grand Sport is so well planted with its Z06 suspension and 12" wheels and tires that is actually needs more power to wake it up. The LT1 in that car is a great combo if you are looking for a very stable/planted ride to produce consistent lap times.

I have the ZL1 now. The LT4 with gobs of torque helps to give it more character since with this amount of power you can upset the chassis even at 3,900lbs.

I found the C5 Z06 I owned had the right balance. 405hp and 3,100lbs. I would love to have that car back with the current M6 transmissions we have in the Camaro. The C6 Z06 was probably even better since it had the higher revving 505hp motor and still weighed under 3,200lbs.

The cars just keep getting heavier and more refined, which ruins the driving experience for folks that appreciate more of that rawness. This is why driving a Miata with a measly 181hp is still so much fun. 2,300lbs paired to a short-geared six speed. Feels like a go-kart on the streets but the lack of power means it falls flat once you reach highway speeds. Although, 60mph in a Miata feels like 100mph.
