Agreed. EVs are more like iPhones in this sense. They typically offer a good 8 year 100-120k mile warranty on the battery and electric motors, but the current price of a Model 3 battery with installation is like $16k. On the flip side the EV drive units tend to last a long time. Folks claim they will go for a million miles.

One must assume that batteries prices would decrease over time as they scale up production but so far it seems to be going in the wrong direction. Furthermore mining the metals for batteries is messy process. I think the industry is banking on battery recycling technology to help offset cost and protect the environment. For example, let’s say, you need a new battery and it costs $10k, you may be able to trade your old battery and get like $5k for it since all the raw materials are still intact. It just needs recycling to be used to make new batteries.
