It'll absolutely be visible when mounted to the windshield or the mirror in a convertible, if you really want a completely stealth solution, you'll need to break the bank with an integrated detector such as the K40.

My personal setup has a Blackvue dash cam mounted to the windshield using their included, very strong and heat resistant tape, then right behind it is a cheap Uniden DFR9 that does 90%+ of what the R3 can do, but it's half the price and, unlike the R3, has the power socket on the right (passenger) side, which was a dealbreaker for me with the R3.

I used a Blendmount mirror bracket for the radar detector, and wired it to the overhead console using Gen5DIY's harness, so there is no "wire intrusion" into the cabin, just the 4-5 inches of wire from the detector to the headliner, even less for the dash cam, looks 99% OEM. (Interestingly, the front edge of the factory headliner has a notch in the middle, seemingly for this very cable routing purpose.)

This is the best one can do on the coupe, and it should work just the same way on the vert. Whenever driving through VA, the one state where detectors are illegal, I take the detector off and "clip" the cable to the detector mount, because I'm like that.
