It seems to me that all of this depends on the journey you want to go on. As already stated: if you want to play with the 1740 because you want to, do it! There are good points to be made on both sides. If you know you're going to end up trying to make 1000, and don't want to waste time, then maybe a 2650 is for you. But if you like to smell the roses along the way, why not stay with the 1740? If you run enough cooling (e.g. E' or meth, or both), then it doesn't seem like it should matter too much. If the possible loss of money or time doesn't matter, who cares? Go with what you like.
