There is no advance step needed to engage NLS. It works by rpm and throttle position. If you have your foot to the floor (and don't lift at all which is hard for me to do because of 40 years of right foot muscle memory during a shift) and the rpms are above 6200 rpm for a regular SS and I believe above 5000 rpm for 1LE and ZL1 then NLS will work.
Note: Don't hold me to those rpm targets as I am going off memory. When I try it which is rare because my right foot just wants to twitch - I always shift right below redline - 6400-6500 rpm.
