You mentioned disabling airbags, is this actually an option somewhere, or is this precisely what you're suggesting that GM offers, possibly via a system setting? If so, I suspect that might be a big liability issue for them, so I'd be shocked if they ever tried to address this issue this way.
Final question: You mention this not being the first time it's happened. How many other instances have you heard of so far? I'm hoping it's not too many.

Lateral airbags.
I'm sure there isna fuse for airbag. But not sure which one is.
It happened many times. I know of at least 5 other people. On youtube u can find somenthing similar happening at buttonwillow ,or autocrossing ,or in the highway cause too loud car.
It just sucks
