Don’t get me wrong, I really really want to try slicks but maybe I should spend my money on more seat time instead of tires.

I didnt make myself clear enough. I can go to 4-5 events on ONE set of tires. These tires will last longer than for example a GY3R tire for sure.
I do AGREE though that seat time with make you faster than a set of tires will if you are at an beginner to intermediate level. It also depends on how aggressive a driver you are. I have always been very aggressive even perhaps when I should have been less so. A better driving line and better braking techniques allow you to be MUCH faster and I did that on my MS 4S tires over a year before I started using a track only setup. Some driving schools will NOT let you run slicks unless you are at a higher skill level simply because they want you to learn good driving techniques FIRST. A poor driving line with slicks for instance will be SLOWER than a good driving line on say MS 4S tires.
Some driving schools have LEAD FOLLOW formats where the instructor is in the car in front of you and you follow his line and braking points EXACTLY. This is a tremendous learning technique and I would highly recommend it. This also allows you to recognize when you are getting better as well because it will take less effort on your part to stay up.
