I use a gong brush with the long handle to clean the barrels. The handle is plastic and does good with not hurting the finish on the wheels. I did get the shorter version too for the face of the wheel, but find a rag works better.
I’ll clean as much of the barrel as possible on all four wheels because the calipers get in the way. After that I’ll hop in the car and move the car so the valve stem rotates 180°. This will expose the dirty area that was at the caliper location to allow cleaning the remaining area. Maybe everyone already cleans their wheels this way. Before this car I’d pull them to clean barrels.

Also, I had the type that was posted
above. The portion that holds the bristles is made from what I’ll call twisted metal coat hangers. It bent and was thrown away. After the fact it should have never been purchased because of having the metal material holding the bristles.
