On long pulls, when I was stock the 2650 to me drove better in the upper rpm from like 4500 rpm to redline especially when it was hot outside It never felt like it was out of power and it kept pulling hard.. The dyno graphs only showed about a 30 or 40 hp increase over a over driven lt4 but it felt so much better.
Sounds like you don't want to go into the motor for a cam right now... What if you got the. Aem 420 lp hour pump, an aftermarket ecu with wide band, port injectors and toohighpsi fuel rails. Or you can do the Kong ported Eforce that has the port injection allocations, AEM pump, and aftermarket ECU.
With one of these setups you can run full E Still.. easily make 800.
