What kind of event are you running?
For a well-organized open lapping day or HPDE, I generally don't think there is much need for it. For a more competitive event then yes, it's a good idea to get it because people are in it to win it and will push their limits.
If you haven't done any motorsport before, try Autocross first so you get a feel in a safer and more slow-paced environment.
