This happened to me on a cool 50 degree day, but I was iddling in one place for over 20 mins. That was long enough that it wanted to run the fan to cool it off. Luckily, I was able to "Get out of line" and go drive at normal speed as soon as the warning popped up and the temps dropped to normal immediately.

You (typically) need to replace the whole assembly. GM Part number 23332215.

It's a large part, comes in a 32" x 30" x 5" box.
