Coming from a motorcycle for years, I'm a pretty big fan of quality helmets (how much $ is your head really worth to you?)

However if you are just getting into this I'd recommend some more budget-friendly options until you know if you are going to stick with one or the other (or both) and then you can drop the money on a quality item depending.

For my own risk assessment, Autocross and track aren't anywhere close to the same level of bodily injury. As such since it gets pretty warm here in the summer, I tend to use a GF open face (SA2015, purchased last year for ~175). Their size chart is fairly accurate but if you are anywhere close to being on the line of the next size up, considering going that route.

I don't track often (2 or 3 events a year, I actually just did my first track event of the year last weekend) and I run a SA2020 RaceQuip full face (~300 @ Summit). RQ quality is a small step up from GF and the sizing chart was more accurate for me. I'd never use an open face on the track, and while likely allowed by most sanctioning bodies, in the event of an impact theres a lot of things I'd rather have that face shield inbetween.

Honestly if I tracked more I'd probably drop a bit more money over the RaceQuip and also use one of the Simpson Hans designed for a 3pt.
