Hmmm. I must have missed the part of you putting the thinner oil back in and the pressure not coming back up. That is concerning I agree.
I have a machine at work that is a road grinder. We switched to running 10W30 in our equipment a few years ago. When this grinder is worked really hard the oil pressure warning will come on and will flicker the oil light. We have put mechanical gauges on it numerous times to monitor and it’s still safe as per the manufacturer which is Cummins. Yet we switched it back to 15W40 and no more issue with the exact same working conditions.
I would have, much like yourself I’m sure, figured if the pressure went down with the 15w50 it would have come back up with the 5w30. Sounds to me like, without looking this up right now but I think I’m correct in my thinking regarding this specific LT4 oil pump, that the solenoid or whatever they use to stroke the pump for more oil psi, isn’t functioning correctly. This is my first thoughts off the top of my head while I’m chilling on a nice day enjoying a beer.
