Not a dumb question and is actually rather common. You can have any mixtire of gasoline and ethanol in the tank. The purpose of the sensor is to communicate the percentage of ethanol to the ECM where fuel duty cycle and timing adjust itself based on the ethanol percentage.
So you could have a half of a tank of 93 in the car and decide you want to top it off with E85. The ECM will adjust for the fuel/ethanol accordingly. If you wanted the entire tank to be E85, same logic applies.
