The factory GM splash shields are way too small even with the factory wheel/tire sizes, and the somewhat more esthetically pleasing ACS rock guards are very expensive.

. I feel it is almost inevitable on a low ground clearance vehicle with wide (& often sticky in comparison to an average car) tires. The flaps can reduce the damage, but I haven't seen where they work well enough to justify having them.
Yes, many of the splash shields from the factory do little for protection.

I think the manufacturers are also on the fence of protection and/or aesthetics. They do look good because customers can be sold on the idea of protection, but it does very minimal at the end of the day. The same can be said for the interior protectant packages, rust proofing, etc. You can buy a bottle for pennies on the dollar, and have the same protection, for what many often fork out hundreds (if not thousands) for.
