Considering all this, his price definitely isn't astronomical, and everyone is free to choose to take it or leave the car alone, because GM is unwilling to produce a similar upgrade path.

Yeah, I can follow and understand all of that, including the fact that no car manufacturer wants to give people reasons to NOT buy new vehicles.
I'd be curious to know if these replacement kits are actually different hardware than what's in the cars right now or not. Because, if they aren't, then why go through all of the trouble of plug-and-play replacement? Why not just reprogram the ones already in the car?
